Why We Choose The Companion Parrot We Do

by Kristy aka "SpinnerGirl"

Sometimes it is fate that brings us to our parrot, other times we do research and then seek out a particular type of parrot. If one chooses their parrot, what do people use as their criteria?

For many it is a combination of things, which may include color. The color of parrots can range from white to the most brilliant reds, blues and greens one has ever seen. Color is a personal thing and may draw a person to a certain type of parrot.

Size of a parrot may influence us as well. If one has smaller living quarters one might perhaps consider getting a smaller parrot, unless having furniture isn’t all that important! With the bigger parrots also comes a bigger beak, which may or may not influence you.

Cost is always something we need to take into account. Not just the cost of the bird itself, but also their dietary needs and housing requirements. A larger parrot needs a roomier and often, a more expensive cage.

Temperament may be one of the most influential factors of all.
One must always keep in mind that parrots are individuals and while a certain species may tend to exhibit certain personalities, that is, of course, something one can not rely on. That being said, there are parrots that tend to be more cuddly, those that are better talkers (again that is never a guarantee), those that can be a bit less needy, and those that need a lot of time spent with them just to keep them tame.

These are just a few factors to keep in mind when selecting a parrot to share your life with.
